[Photography Course for Beginners] Camera Types and Selection Tips ① Film Cameras
Share
Thank you for visiting our blog.
This time, we'd like to create an article for those who are planning to buy a camera. There are various types of cameras. Broadly speaking, they are divided into "film cameras" and "digital cameras."
Many of you are probably aware of the differences between these two.
We will explain the points to consider when choosing each type for beginners.
This time, we will focus on "film cameras."
Film Cameras

- Compact Film Cameras
- SLR Cameras
- Rangefinder Cameras
Compact Film Cameras

These are compact, all-in-one cameras like the one above, with a built-in lens and flash.
Before the switch to digital cameras, many people captured memories with this type of camera.
We even have customers who bring in cameras saying, "I found my mom or dad's camera, can it still be used?"
Isn't it romantic to photograph your own children with the camera that photographed you when you were little?
We can assess whether it's usable in-store, so feel free to bring it in!
Compact film cameras are recommended for those who have used disposable cameras like the "Utsurundesu" but now want their own camera.
If you want a slim and highly functional camera that you can take anywhere, a compact film camera is a good choice.
You'll likely make fewer mistakes with it.
At our store, it's currently the most popular film camera among young people!
Points to Check Before Buying
- Type of built-in lens
"Zoom lens" or "prime lens"... Zoom lenses are convenient for photographing distant scenery by bringing it closer.
Prime lenses, like disposable cameras, cannot zoom, so you need to adjust the field of view by moving your feet. Compared to zoom lenses, prime lenses are generally better in low light and offer higher image quality.
- Flash (strobe) emission
Among compact cameras, some have no problems with power on and shooting, but the flash doesn't fire, or it takes a long time to fire. If the flash can't be used, it's difficult to shoot indoors or in dark places, so it's a good idea to check before purchasing.
- Whether it can shoot in auto mode
While cameras with integrated lenses are called compact cameras, some require manual focusing, exposure, film advance, and rewind.
If you're considering an auto camera, be careful not to misunderstand.
SLR Cameras
SLR cameras are primarily characterized by a viewfinder that directly shows the scene in front of you and the ability to change lenses.SLRs are broadly divided into two types.
AF SLR

Their appearance is almost identical to digital SLRs, with the main difference being the presence or absence of an LCD screen on the back.
Since lenses can be interchanged, the range of photography expands.
Using auto mode, you just need to decide the desired range and press the shutter, allowing for brisk shooting.
You can also take photos with beautiful background blur using a prime lens.
Many models and manufacturers allow lenses to be shared with digital cameras, so you can use both digital and film cameras.
If you already own lenses or are considering a digital SLR in the future, it might be worth considering. ◎
Recommended Models
Below is a selection of mid-range models. In addition to basic functions, their robust and sturdy bodies are also a major plus.
They can also share lenses with digital cameras.
- Nikon F100
- Canon EOS 7
- MINOLTA α-7
MF SLR

Some people choose them for their retro look. They're cute, aren't they?
Most of these cameras require you to set the shutter speed and aperture values yourself for shooting.
We recommend models with a built-in exposure meter to indicate if these values are correct, or those equipped with aperture-priority AE (where the shutter speed is automatically set once the aperture is chosen).
The recommended point about these cameras is that by operating everything manually, you can easily understand how photography works.
Also, since they are older products, interchangeable lenses are often available at a lower cost.
They are recommended for those who want to seriously get into photography.
Many people bring in cameras saying, "I got my grandpa's camera!", but they often don't work or have deteriorated parts.
The same condition can be found when purchasing used cameras, so be careful.
Be careful not to buy anything labeled "junk."
Recommended Models
Below is a selection of popular models that include an exposure meter or AE function. If there are no defects, all of them are highly recommended.
- Nikon FM/FE series
- Canon AE-1
- OLYMPUS OM-1
- PENTAX SP
Rangefinder Cameras

This type of camera dates back even further than the SLR cameras mentioned above.
A rangefinder mechanism is built into the camera, which is used to focus.
When it comes to rangefinders, Leica comes to mind.
Leica's rangefinder history is long, and even in an era where automation is standard,
they continue to sell digital rangefinder cameras.
Advanced users of Leica can press the shutter faster than with AF cameras.
If mastered, it can be a very quick-shooting camera.
Due to its peculiar characteristics and the fact that one camera isn't suitable for all types of photography,
it's not highly recommended for beginners. They are also expensive...
I introduced it here as it is one of the representative types of film cameras.
Summary
- For easy portability, choose a "Compact Camera."
- For interchangeable lenses and brisk shooting, choose an "AF SLR Camera."
- For seriously learning photography, choose an "MF SLR Camera."
